With warmer temperatures arriving for the bank holiday weekend, many dog owners across the UK will be planning longer walks, café visits, and days out with their dogs. But while the sunshine is enjoyable for us, hot weather can quickly become uncomfortable — and even dangerous — for our four-legged companions.
Here are a few simple ways to help keep your dog safe, cool, and happy during the warmer days ahead.
1. Avoid midday walks
We love routine ,and so do our dogs. but when the weather is hotter, we need to start thinking more carefully about their welfare . So what can we do ? well consider taking your walks early morning or in the evening when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable.
2. Always carry water
Carrying water while out walking is important to keep yourself and your dog cool in hot weather .
3. Never leave dog’s in cars
Leaving dogs in cars even on a moderately warm day can be dangerous , the main risk is heatstroke , dogs cannot rely on sweat like we humans can and rely on panting to cool down , this isn’t enough to cool a dog down in a hot car.
4. Watch for signs of heatstroke
- excessive panting
- drooling
- lethargy
- vomiting
- confusion
5. Use shade & rest breaks
Try to keep walks short , slow and use shaded areas for rest breaks , keep your dog indoors if your dog is showing signs of early heatstroke keep them cool and restrict excessive exercise.
6. Cooling mats & frozen treats
A great way of keeping your dog cool and comfortable in hot weather is by using cool mats and a doggy ice cream treat!
‘Remember: Not Every Dog Handles Heat the Same”
Older dogs, flat-faced breeds, nervous dogs, and overweight dogs may struggle more.
“Sometimes the best summer walk is the shortest one. Keeping our dogs safe always comes first.”
